Today, publisher The Irregular Corporation and developer Foxy Voxel have released their dark ages city builder Going Medieval to Early Access. Available via Steam, The Epic Games Store, and GOG.com, Going Medieval will allow players to craft the kingdom of their dreams in the period following The Black Death. With an undeniable attention to detail and a very interesting low-poly art style, the game certainly looks set to carve a place of its own among similar titles of the genre such as Anno 1404 and Foundation. Check out the launch trailer below.

Going Medieval has certainly chosen an interesting direction, mixing the best elements of both survival games and city sims to create a unique and varied experience. Players will not only build villages and design their layout, but fight off enemies, animals, hunger, and even the weather. The material and personnel management systems within the game certainly seem incredibly robust and well thought out. For example, your villagers will receive a debuff upon seeing the dead bodies of your enemies and be affected for some time following. The villagers can also be injured in specific ways and have needs much like those of Sims characters – they must eat, drink, sleep, etc.

Leading a civilization of your own out of the murk and the mire has got to be one of the most rewarding (and addicting) feelings in gaming. The Civilization series has certainly proved that for just short of three decades. As Going Medieval progresses through Early Access, it will be exciting to see how the title carves out its own version of the medieval life experience. The development team has released a roadmap of features that will be coming during Early Access, many of which sound unique to the title and very immersive. Some of these features include wildlife taming, a prisoner system, randomly-generated caves and ruins, accumulating snow, and object flammability.

You can pick up an Early Access copy of Going Medieval for $24.99; however, there is currently a 10% discount for the game until June 8 on Steam and GOG.com and until the end of the Epic Mega Sale (June 17) on the Epic Games Store.
