Godzilla vs Kong has been moved back eight months to November 20, 2020. Originally slated for March 13, 2020, those hyped for the Warner Bros. and Legendary feature will have to wait a little longer, according to The Wrap. So, what’s going on here? Why has the release been moved? Well, we shall answer that in just a moment. But, first, a little about the film.
A Little About Godzilla vs Kong
Godzilla vs Kong is the upcoming culmination of Legendary’s MonsterVerse and is the film to bring these two characters together. The last time these two titans of monster movie culture were last seen together was in 1962’s King Kong vs Godzilla. Produced by Japanese owner of Godzilla Toho, the film was extremely popular. Therefore, it seems only fitting that the two would meet again on screen.
The film was written by Terry Rossio and is directed by Adam Wingard. Starring in the production is Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown and Rebecca Hall, amongst other notable faces. So, it would seem the production has enough star-caliber talent to draw people’s attention. And, with principal photography having completed back in April, you have to wonder why the movie has been delayed. Well, let’s take a look!
Godzilla vs Kong Could Bomb
Firstly, it’s best to point out that this is the third time the release date has been moved. Originally planned to release in May 2020, then moved to March 2020 and, finally, to November 2020. That is a lot of indecisive activity!
Secondly, Warner Bros. may be holding off the release because of the lower than expected ticket sales of this Summer’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The studio may be waiting in order to market the film better and create something that has a stronger critical reception. However, when it’s a kaiju film, do you really need critical praise? Everyone who’s even heard of these monsters’ names knows what they’re walking into.
Finally, the writing was on the wall when Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich hinted at taking a slower approach to the post-production of Godzilla vs Kong, saying:
Either way, I’m sure plenty of us are looking forward to seeing the absolute carnage when it releases on November 20, 2020.
