Egil the Oath Guard is a Miniboss in God of War Ragnarok that players encounter in The Plains, next to the western border of The Sinkholes in Vanaheim. Defeating this enemy will reward combatants with Folkvangr Whetstone and Bonded Leather. Folkvangr Whetstone is an upgrade material used to enhance Freya’s Sword, while Bonded Leather is required for attaining the Level 9 Upgrade for pieces of the Fallen Stars Armor Set. Fallen Stars Armor is a defensive set that should certainly not be overlooked by players, as it is one of the best means of protection for Runic Attacks and Relic users in combat, thanks to its Arcanist’s Defense perk.

Defeating Egil the Oath Guard in God of War Ragnarok

Egil the Oath Guard wields a massive greatsword weapon in God of War Ragnarok that somewhat stifles his movement speed but deals devasting damage if his blows connect with Kratos. If players inspect Egil’s equipped gear, they will notice that this enemy has a round shield attached to his back, indicating that strikes done to his backside are not effective.

How To Transmog Armor in God of War Ragnarok

Accordingly, YouTuber TheUntouchableWolf recommends that players attack Egil the Oath Guard in God of War Ragnarok from the front of his body. As for dodging, his overhead vertical slash cannot be parried but should be avoided by stepping to the side. On the other hand, Egil has a sweeping sword slash that will sometimes chain together into a spinning combo. Players must continually avoid each sweep but use the final slash to their advantage, as it is a yellow-ring attack that can be parried or blocked.

Sometimes, Egil the Oath Guard in God of War Ragnarok will walk backward toward Kratos, with his shield facing the players’ view. He will then execute a follow-up attack, during which he lunges at Kratos with a dashing stab. This move cannot be parried and should be avoided at all costs. Additionally, he has another special move that crushes the ground around in a circular AoE. If players see Egil raising his hand into the hair, they should block with their shield and prepare for impact. Finally, it is advised that combatants use their Spartan Rage at the end of the fight as a finishing assault or whenever Kratos’s HP gets dangerously low for an emergency heal.

God of War: Ragnarok is available exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
