In the new God of War Kratos will be using the Leviathan Axe to start out the game, but there are other options available to him both at the start of the game and ones that he’ll encounter later on.  The Leviathan Axe is Kratos’ primary weapon, but he can also use his fists and shield as melee weapons.

To switch between weapons in God of War, you don’t have to access any menus to do so.  You simply use the directional pad while in combat.  By pressing right on the D-pad, Kratos can toggle between whether he wants to use the Leviathan Axe or the Shield and Fist combo.

If you throw the Leviathan Axe, you will automatically default to using your fists and shield for attacks.  Recalling the axe however will make that your primary weapon again.  There are different enemy types that are unaffected by the Leviathan Axe, so being able to switch quickly can be quite helpful.

About midway into the game, Kratos will get access to another weapon (The Blades of Chaos) and he’ll start to encounter a mixture of enemies that require you to switch between it, the Leviathan Axe, or Fists and Shield.  To switch to the Blades of Chaos you’ll need to press left on the D-Pad.

  • When using the Leviathan Axe you press right on the D-pad to switch to fists and left on the D-pad to switch to Blades of Chaos.
  • When using the Blades of Chaos you press left on the D-pad to switch to to fists and right on the D-pad to switch to Leviathan Axe.
  • When using fists you press right on the D-pad to switch to Leviathan Axe and left on the D-pad to switch to Blades of Chaos.

The thing to remember here is to use the D-pad on the PS4 controller to switch between weapons, regardless of what ones they are.
