Glover, yes, you read that correctly, Glover is coming back in a big way. PIKO Interactive announced today that the classic 3D platformer from the nineties is coming back in HD. A full HD remaster is coming to Steam on April 20th, 2022.
PIKO Interactive acquired the rights to Glover in 2017. Since then, they have been working to bring the game to a modern platform. The finished HD remaster uses native code from the Nintendo 64 release, guaranteeing that it will stay true to the original.
Along with the announcement comes a trailer showing Glover in all of its newfound glory. Take a look at the trailer below.
About the game
Glover is a 3D puzzle platformer, originally released on the Nintendo 64 and Sony PlayStation. The game reached near-cult classic status in the years after release.
In the game, you control a magical glove on a quest to retrieve crystals and restore the Crystal Kingdom. The goal of each level is to move a ball to the end of the stage. Once players complete three stages and defeat a boss, a crystal ball can be restored at the kingdom’s castle. The ball can take several different forms in order to clear obstacles and defeat enemies.
The game generally received positive reviews, with critics and players praising its level design and challenge. A sequel was in development in 1999 and looked to expand on the story, improve graphics, and add multiplayer. However, the sequel never saw the light of day. The series has been in limbo ever since.
Glover is a bizarre game, for sure.
PIKO Interactive and the HD remaster
In 2017, PIKO Interactive purchased the rights to Glover from Atari SA, which had originally gotten the rights from Hasbro Interactive in 2001. PIKO Interactive focuses on physical re-releases and digital ports of classic video games. Most notably, the studio released the previously canceled Nintendo 64 game, 40 Winks.
In addition to the HD remaster or Glover, PIKO Interactive hopes to finish and release the canceled sequel, Glover 2.
The Glover HD remaster will be available on April 20th on Steam.
