A nostalgic tradition surrounding Pokémon is returning when Detective Pikachu hits theaters in May. Yes, when fans head to the theater they will receive a special trading card featuring the film’s leading electric Pokémon.

The promo card includes Detective Pikachu sipping a cup of coffee from the Hi-Hat Café. However, there is a catch, and no it’s not to collect them all, but the card will only be available for those who see the movie during opening weekend.

Handing out trading cards during Pokémon movies is not a new experience for trainers. Nostalgic collectors will remember special trading cards released twenty years ago with Pokémon: The First Movie.

A promo silver foil card was also released for anyone who rented the movie at Blockbuster Video. However, with the loss of the beloved Blockbuster, that is one thing we won’t be seeing when Detective Pikachu becomes available to rent. Unless they send you a card in the mail when you rent it online.

I firmly believe they will release another card or pack when the movie is out to buy.

A Detective Pikachu expansion pack for the Pokémon Trading Card Game includes 27 new cards. Each one depicts a Pokémon seen in the movie. While the cards do feature not one but two versions of Detective Pikachu, they are different than the promo one you’ll receive at the theater. So true collectors will want to make like a trainer and collect them all.

Tickets for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu are available now. To hold you over while you wait, check out Ryan Reynolds audition, as he puts it, and see other adorable Pokémon trying out for their roles in the movie.

It’s important to note that the exclusive cards may run out and you are not guaranteed to get one. The movie releases May 10th.
