This year’s version of The Game Awards included an announcement trailer and launch date for the upcoming Gears Tactics. An offshoot of the Gears of War series, this version is different than any of its predecessors.

While every other Gears title has been a third-person shooter, Gears Tactics with be a turn-based strategy title. While he had gotten details about what the game had to offer, this was also the first time we got to lay eyes on what it will look like.

It turns out the in-game mechanics aren’t the only big change in Gears Tactics. It turns out the story is based during a period of time that pre-dates Marcus Fenix. The new title will take on the story right around the time the Locust War began.

We also finally got a release date for the game. Landing on the Xbox One and PC this April, it will unsurprisingly launch day and date on Xbox Game Pass.

That tactic worked well for Gears 5, which saw a spike in popularity thanks to having a fan base that didn’t need to fork over $60 in order to play it. Microsoft also says the new title will be coming to the Xbox Game Pass for PC, though it appears it won’t be on launch day.

Gears Tactics goes live on April 28, 2020.
