GameStop is confident that the PlayStation 4 will play used games. In a recent conference call for the company, GameStop’s CEO Paul Raines explained that he is confident that the platform will be capable of playing second-hand titles.
Though even if the console will be able to play them, Raines said that it will ultimately be left to video game publishers to allow their games to be sold and replayed in the secondary market. Since the PS4 announcement there have been conflicting reports about whether or not the console would be able to play used titles, and Sony has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
Following the reveal, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida said that the console would be “consumer friendly”, allowing players to play used games and that it would not feature an always online requirement. Shortly thereafter, Sony’s Fergal Gara explained that there has been no official announcement as of yet.
We’ll likely hear whether or not Sony plans to implement any used game blocking on their next console by E3, but even if we do hear that they will be allowed, it sounds like publishers may be taking their own stance irrespective of Sony.
