Pokémon Sword and Shield are remaining relevant seven months after the duo’s November launch. The much-anticipated Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass is a handful of days away. Given that this is the first-ever Pokémon expansion pass, players are likely to return in droves to the Galar region. And to get us ready for it, Game Freak has been handing out Mystery Gift Pokémon left and right. For the next few days, Galarian Corsola is one such Pokémon.
Corsola: From Johto to Galar
The Galarian version of the Johto Pokémon, Corsola, has been available through the Mystery Gift feature in Pokémon Sword and Shield since June 5. For long-time players, you’ll remember Corsola as an adorable water-rock type Pokémon. The pink, sentient chunk of coral was originally a non-evolving monster, until Sword and Shield.
Corsola, in the Galar region, is now a ghost-type Pokémon. And, it has a brand-new evolution. Becoming Cursola at level 38.
A New Pokémon Tradition
Region-specific forms of older Pokémon has become a standard since 2016’s Pokémon Sun and Moon. Back then we saw Vulpix and Ninetails, Sandshrew and Sandslash, and others receive new takes on their original designs. It was a risk that paid off for Game Freak. Three years later, Pokémon Sword and Shield perfected the formula.
The re-imagining of Corsola on the Nintendo Switch is a refreshing take on the long-time staple. Its evolution is a rather formidable monster to utilize throughout a play-through. Given its new ghost-typing and increased stats, Sp Atk 145 and Sp Def 130, Cursola is an ideal partner for late-game battles and the looming Expansion Pass.
If you haven’t secured your Galarian Corsola yet, fret not. This specific Mystery Gift will be available within Pokémon Sword and Shield until June 11. Simply start up your save file and select “Mystery Gift” from the options menu. Press “Get via internet” and you’ll have your very own bad-ass haunted slab of living coral in a few seconds..
