This week’s Fantastic Four #45 makes some big changes to Galactus and the Marvel Universe. Dan Slott’s penultimate issue shows the fallout of the Reckoning War. This fallout sees the return of Galactus and the expansion of the entire universe. Talk about going big or going home!

Let’s Start with Galactus

Writer Dan Slott and artist Farid Karami worked on this week’s Fantastic Four #45. The issue focuses on the Silver Surfer leading the Destruction; the being Thor created from Galactus’ body to the heart of the Reckoning War. After the battle, Johnny Storm helps the Silver Surfer feed Destruction the Wrath’s M’kraan armor to stop it from exploding. This causes a “cosmic chrysalis” that sees Galactus and the Destroyer reborn.

The Silver Surfer tries to determine if the reborn Galactus is anything like his former self. He asks if he still wishes to devour planets. While Galactus admits to having a hunger, it is no longer a hunger for planets. Instead, he wishes for knowledge to sate his appetite. Specifically, he wants to understand the newly created corner of the Marvel Universe; the Borderlands.

What Is This New Area of Space?

Speaking of the Borderlands, it is the newly created portion of the universe from the Watchers. During the issue, all of the Watchers learn that their actions are responsible for the worst suffering in the universe. Uatu absorbs the power of all Watchers and decided to rectify their mistakes. He transforms the barrier erected to protect the universe from the potential danger the Watchers’ looked out for. The barrier is then turned into the Borderlands. This new area of the universe, 1000% of its original size, is ripe for exploration.

As Galactus vows to hunger for knowledge, the Silver Surfer decides to join him as a companion in the Marvel universe. Together, the two fly into the newly opened section of space to see what the Borderlands have to offer.
