Microsoft launched the Xbox One without either of its big shooter franchises this year. Halo, an Xbox exclusive developed by 343 Industries, nor Gears of War developed externally by Epic Games, was a no-show for launch.

While it’s only a matter of time before Halo 5 lands on the Xbox One, Gears of War on the other hand, isn’t such a certainty. Speaking in a recent interview with Kotaku, Phil Spencer revealed that Microsoft is interested in a new Gears of War game on the Xbox One, but it’s not their franchise.

“I can’t make any assurances about anybody else’s franchise,” said Spencer. “I want to continue to work with Gears. I think there’s a lot of life left in that franchise. We had an internal discussion on it even yesterday. It’s something that’s active in discussion about what we can do with Gears.”

The minds behind the original Gears of War trilogy have gone their separate ways in recent years. If Gears of War was to return, it wouldn’t be by the same developers that led the creation of the first three games in the series. We’ll have to wait and see if anything develops on the Gears of War front, but Spencer told Kotaku that he’s not holding anything back at the moment, “there’s nothing even pending,” when it comes to Gears of War news for the Xbox One.
