Funimation confirmed early this morning that they would begin streaming the television release of Life Lessons with Uramichi-Oniisan.
With the manga release in 2017, it previously won the Web Manga category of Niconico’s third Manga Awards. It also took second place in 2018’s Nippon’s “Web Manga General Election.” The story also made it into the top 20 list for Kono Manga Sugioi’s ranking for female readers. At the same time, the manga has its own twisted sense of humor with all of its characters and just how wacky the given situations are.
Uramichi-Oniisan and His Mundane Life
The manga centers around a 31-year-old man named Uramichi Omota, who has two hilarious and drastic sides to his personality. On one side, he has an upbeat and cheerful personality that he uses mainly for his job to host a children’s show. However, in the midst of his “life-lessons,” Uramichi often goes on strange, dark, and cynical tangents that reflect on his own cynicism.
Iketeru Daga is one of Uramichi’s co-stars. He is the show’s song instructor, who also happens to have a knack for dirty jokes. Utano Tadano is the other co-star to the show. Utano Tadano is the third co-host. She is depressed because she is the last (and the oldest) of her friends to get married. The show also features two characters younger than the initial cast. Tobikichi Usahara and Mitsuo Kumatani play the show’s two mascot characters. These two refuse to look Uramichi in the eye (with and without their costumes).
The show and the original source material manga labels itself as a dark comedy. It also tells the story of Uramichi’s desire to find someone who truly understands how he feels. This underlying story is what propels him and the other cast members throughout their misadventures. They’re all good at the jobs they hate and struggle to find something else that can bring something new into their lives.
The release was originally delayed from its initial 2020 release. This is due to an unspecified “production issue” found on the studio’s official website. Nobuyoshi Nagayama (Happy Sugar Life) directs Uramichi-Oniisan. Studio Blanc.. is behind the animation for all 12 episodes.
Television and streaming release for Life Lessons with Uramichi-Oniisan starts on July 5th.
