The Lord of the Rings is getting a new tabletop game based on the fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons. The books will be published by Free League Publisher and Sophisticated Games.

The One Ring was originally released in 2011 and included several expansion and additional content later on. However, Cubicle 7, the original publisher, ceased printing all copies of The One Ring in November 2019.

Players could create their own character and journey across Middle-earth. Some of the modules followed the events in Erebor, detailed Rivendell, and took players through Mirkwood.

Free League announced on March 9, 2020, it will take over the rights to The One Ring and will begin producing new content for the tabletop game with the original author Francesco Nepitello and game designer Marco Maggi.

Free League shares all our values. Values which are vital in interpreting the most extraordinary fantasy world ever created, one that is of enduring interest throughout the world in every language. Working with Free League’s highly talented team we look forward to continuing the work we began a decade ago, with publication of The One Ring,”

Free League posted about the announcement on social media saying,

“We are thrilled to be working with Sophisticated Games and Francesco Nepitello to bring to life a new edition of The One Ring and its 5E iteration. We grew up with J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic works and we’re huge fans of the original version of the game. We have a very similar approach to game design as Francesco and we’re convinced that we can create something truly special together.”

There is no mention of when the first new book for The One Ring will be released. The agreement between the two companies is set to become official on June 1, 2020.
