Ryan Reynolds? Over-the-top explosions? Witty repartee and existential crises whispered in earnest to a goldfish named “Goldie”? You had me at goldfish. I’m talking about Director Shawn Levy’s (known for Stranger Things and Arrival) Free Guy, now set for release May 21. Like for reals, for reals this time, guys.

Free Guy tells us the story of a mild-mannered bank teller who frolics through life completely unaware that his daily dose of crashing through windows, getting hit by flaming taxi-cabs, and dodging bullets that threaten to puncture his morning gas-station coffee isn’t the day that your average “Guy” typically lives out in the real world. Free Guy promises to entertain us with Ryan Reynold’s classic brand of dead-pan, absurdist humor, something that all of us at The Nerd Stash have been impatiently anticipating since December of 2019 when Free Guy’s initial trailer was released.

Certainly not the only release date to be delayed, changed, and delayed again in light of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Free Guy has kept Reynolds fans waiting since the originally anticipated release date of July 2020. In legendary Deadpool comedic fashion, Reynolds released this video on Twitter last month sharing his humor-laced opinion on the forever in-flux release date of the film. He states, “We have a New Release date for Free Guy!” and “This time it’s one hundred percent locked in! I’ve never been so sure of anything in my entire life as long as I live.” What’s even funnier still (and exactly Reynold’s point) is that shortly after that video, the release date changed yet again—but this time, to earlier!

So, with fingers and toes crossed, I hope to be walking along the streets of Free City on May 21 alongside Ryan Reyolds as “Guy,” finally getting that much-anticipated dose of his on-brand wit, along with some pretty badass pyrotechnics.
