Gotham has released a promo image for its series finale version of iconic Batman villain: the Joker. It has already been revealed this final episode will take place in the future, revealing the endings of the new takes on these classic characters. Actor Cameron Monaghan will be taking on the role of the Joker. Rumor has already spun for years regarding Monaghan’s character and who he might turn out to be in the future. Due to restrictions, Gotham has not been allowed to use the name “the Joker”, so it has been left a mystery throughout the series.

In Gotham’s first season, Monaghan played a character known as Jerome Valeska, an insane murderer with a melodramatic flair. As the seasons progressed, Jerome took on more Joker qualities, including a fierce rivalry with Bruce Wayne (not yet the Batman). But after Jerome’s death, his twin brother Jeremiah took up his mission. Jeremiah was still played by actor Cameron Monaghan. When fans last saw Jeremiah, he had fallen into the  Joker’s trademark vat of chemicals and was unresponsive.

But it’s been confirmed that is not the last fans will see of him. This flash-forward series finale will feature unique versions of Batman, Commissioner Gordon, Penguin, and Jeremiah Valeska as the Joker. Fox has released a new poster and teaser trailer highlighting this character. He certainly is scary to behold. Though fans of Batman, in general, have always praised Heath Ledger’s performance of the crazed killer, each new rendition brings something new and interesting to a character always steeped in darkness and mystery.

Monaghan has drawn large praise for his portrayal of the Joker. Most notably from Mark Hamill, who has been critically acclaimed for his voice-over work as the villain in the Batman animated series and the Arkham video games. Given Fox has a lot of restrictions regarding what they can utilize from the Joker, it should be interesting to see how they handle it.
