Fortnite has officially launched its v17.20 patch, so here’s everything that’s been changed and added with this update. While nothing super exciting to talk about here, there are a few meaningful additions of note. Namely, the new Preferred Item Slots should let you spend less time organizing your inventory, and more time in battle or gathering loot. The new Arena mode, Bugha’s Late Game, should provide some nice things for players as well. Without further adieu, here’s everything that’s been changed and added with Fortnite update 17.20!

Disclaimer: These patch notes will exclusively cover Battle Royale and Creative. If you’d like the official Save the World changes, check out the official patch notes here.

Fortnite Update 17.20 Patch Notes

Battle Royale

New Mode and Tournament: Bugha’s Late Game

The Bugha’s Late Game Arena mode will soon be available in the playlist selection screen. Part of the festivities for Bugha entering the Icon Series, this mode puts players right in the middle of competitive Fortnite. Here’s the rundown!

  • With your Trio, you’ll drop on the Island while the Storm’s already closing in.
  • We’ve collaborated with Bugha to curate nine starting inventories grouped into three team loadouts. Each Trio will be assigned one of these team loadouts at random.
  • As you play, you’ll be able to earn Hype unique to the mode. The players who earn at least 1500 Hype before Bugha’s Late Game Tournament on July 28 will be eligible to participate in the tournament.

In the Bugha’s Late Game tournament version, qualified players will compete against others in their region for a share of $100,000! Read more in our Bugha Icon Series blog post.

New Setting: Preferred Item Slots

Take control of your loadout with the new Preferred Item Slot preferences! Located in the Game tab of the Settings menu, Preferred Item Slots lets you designate which inventory space you want a weapon or item type to go when picked up.

The default active configuration for Item Slots 1-5 is 1) Assault Rifle | 2) Shotgun | 3) Unassigned | 4) Unassigned | 5) Consumable, but you can retool this to fit your play style. Want Snipers in Slot 3? Hit the “Configure” button and toggle the slot to your preferred weapon type. The next time you loot a Sniper-type item, it’ll be assigned to your third inventory space and hotkey.

Like-for-like items will respect your Preferred Item Slots even if the slot is filled, swapping in the higher-rarity item. For example, loot an Epic Pump Shotgun and it will replace your Uncommon one even if you have something else like Bandages equipped. Preferred Item Slots is only active when you have at least one empty inventory slot, and the “Auto-Sort Consumables to Right” setting will continue to function as normal alongside your preferences.

  • Fixed an issue with the camera while steering an ATK.
  • Fixed an issue with the bounce pad when used with the mutator zone.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from scrolling up when looking at scoreboards.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from flipping over the X-4 Stormwing and ATK.

  • Fixed an issue where Creatures failed to spawn from the Creature Placer device after placing vehicles.

Island Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where interaction orbs would not turn off the matchmaking portals on Hub Islands.
  • Fixed an issue with no ground collision under the water for all islands.
  • Important Note: We’ve noticed recently that over time a number of devices have been tagged incorrectly or not tagged with all the applicable categories, resulting in the Filter list in the Device Gallery being less than helpful in some cases.  In this release we have gone through and ensured that all devices are now tagged correctly, and even added a couple of new Filter categories to pull devices into logical groups which will hopefully make things a lot easier to find.  We know that this might upset muscle-memory for some people who have been using Creative for a long time, but hopefully the overall benefits of having everything tagged and filtered logically will outweigh any temporary confusion. Thanks for your patience.
  • Added a rainbow flag to General Props Gallery A.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the shipping container from Industrial Gallery B to appear white and grey.
  • Fixed an issue with the Sloped Glass gallery pieces that prevented players from placing the gallery in specific directions.
  • Fixed an issue with Z-fighting on front door floors in Colossal Coliseum.
  • Fixed an issue where some of the trim assets from the Colossal Coliseum Wall Gallery would self-destruct.

Device Fixes

  • Fixed an issue with the Timer Device that caused it to count down rather than up.
  • Fixed an issue with the mutator zone that prevented players from performing some actions, such as firing or building when it wasn’t supposed to.
  • Fixed an issue with the Health Powerup device that caused textures to fail to appear when placed.

UI Fixes

  • Fixed an issue with Kymera Ray Gun crosshairs appearing incorrect.
  • Fixed an issue with party size not updating properly in the hub when players leave.
  • Adjusted search tags for Devices in order to more accurately describe device usability.

Fortnite update 17.20 is now available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS. For more information regarding this update, check out the official Battle Royale and Creative blog posts.
